UCO Students filming Doritos commercial

The Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association (OBEA) will honor University of Central Oklahoma professional media students at its annual student broadcast competition in March for receiving 12 awards for student-produced audio/radio and video/television broadcast work.

“We are proud that our student’s talents are being recognized,” said David Nelson, Ed.D., professor of mass communication and OBEA representative for Central.

In the radio categories, under the direction of Nelson, Central’s professional media students placed second and third in the “Audio Newscast” category with Sam Royka and Reagan Francisco placing second and third respectively, with the UCentral Radio newscast update.

In the “Entertainment Talk” category, Jules Black won first with her podcast,”Hohtaheo: Tales of the Indigenous” podcast and Bradie Gray placed third with his sports podcast, “The Play.” The two also placed in the “Station/Programming Promo” category with Gray finishing second with his “The Play” podcast promo and Black finishing third with her “Beyond The Rez” podcast promo.

In the “Radio Personality Reel,” category, Jules Black won first place for her radio show, “Jules in the Morning,” on the student radio station, UCentral Radio.

In “Radio Sports Play-by-Play,” Ian Nikkel placed first for his play-by-play of the “UCO vs Ouachita Baptist” playoff game, and CJ Craig placed second with his play-play of the “UCO vs Emporia State” football game radio broadcast.

In “Sports Magazine/Talk Program,” Mark Lowe won first with his entry, “The Broncho Breakdown Sports Magazine.”

In “Video Commercial” category under the instruction of Assistant Professor, Milos Ajdinovic, Kaleb Gonzales won first place with his entry, “Talent Show-Doritos.”

In “Short Narrative” category, Alex Dawson placed second with his entry, “ Modus Operandi.”

 

The OBEA award and OAB scholarship winners will be recognized at the annual OAB Student Day Awards Luncheon on March 27 at the River Spirit Casino Resort in Tulsa.

 

Twelve Oklahoma universities and colleges participated in the OBEA student competition, which generated 230 entries and judged by media professionals from the Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Enid, Lawton and surrounding regional media markets.
