This past summer, a group of eager students embarked on the “Labyrinths and the Louvre: French Culture and Contemplation” study tour, exploring the rich history and vibrant culture of France. The tour spanned several cities, offering an immersive experience that was both educational and transformative.

Cities Explored:

  • Paris
  • Chartres
  • Amiens
  • Saint Quentin

Sites Visited: The students had the opportunity to visit a variety of significant cultural and historical sites, including:

  • Labyrinths in the Paris Jardin des Plantes;
  • Chartres Cathedral;
  • Amiens Cathedral;
  • Basilica in Saint Quentin;
  • The Louvre;
  • Sainte Chapelle;
  • Cluny Museum;
  • Orangerie Museum; and
  • Palace of Versailles, its gardens, and the Trianon, including the Queen’s Hamlet

Primary Objective: The primary goal of this study tour was to immerse students in another culture. This was achieved through the tour’s theme as well as exposure to public transportation, language use, dining experiences, and interactions with locals.

Academic Learnings and Outcomes: Students gained first-hand experience of life in one of the world’s biggest cities, exploring both its contemplative aspects and its major sites. They developed a deeper understanding of French culture, history, and daily life.

Student Testimonials and Notable Experiences: One student shared, “I was disappointed I had to go home. I think I was disappointed because it felt as though there was still so much left for me to explore and experience (but I guess that just means I’ll have to visit again!). I’m still so grateful to have had this invaluable experience and to have learned so much.”

Another student reflected, “It’s hard to express how this trip changed me. I almost wish I could write about it every day….I also really enjoyed learning the language. I was so proud of myself by the end of the trip feeling like I could survive here on my own. Overall, the trip was a one-in-a-lifetime experience and I’m so grateful I got to go on it. From seeing other people’s cultures to gaining a newfound appreciation for the simpleness of Oklahoma life.”

Cultural Activities and Experiences: Among the many highlights were labyrinth walks in Paris, Chartres, Amiens, and Saint Quentin, along with visits to Versailles, the Louvre, Sainte Chapelle, and Sacre Coeur.

Why This Matters: These tours are life-changing for our students, many of whom might not otherwise have the means or ability to travel internationally. They require a great deal of work from the faculty leads but are among the most satisfying of professional endeavors.
