Why Pets Are Often Treated Better Than Grandparents: Presentation by the Honorable Lance Robertson

The UCO Department of Department of Sociology, Gerontology, and Substance Abuse Studies will host a seminar titled “Why Pets Are Often Treated Better Than Grandparents: Ageism and Inequality in Elder Care” presented by the Honorable Lance Robertson at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022 in the Liberal Arts Lecture Hall (LAS L01).

The Honorable Lance Robertson served as the fifth US Assistant Secretary on Aging following his nomination by the President and unanimous confirmation by the US Senate.  He served in that role from 2017 to 2021 and concurrently served as Administrator of the Administration for Community Living in the Department of Health and Human Services responsible for services to older adults and people with disabilities.  Prior to his federal service, he headed Oklahoma’s Aging Services agency for a decade under two governors. He started his career in 1993 at Oklahoma State University and served there until 2006, where he directed university extension programming and co-founded the Gerontology Institute. He is a US Army Veteran. He is a proud UCO Broncho, having completed his Masters of Public Administration degree in 2015, and was awarded the 2019 UCO Distinguished Alumni award. He is a member of the UCO President’s Advisors and a UCO Presidential Partner. His youngest daughter, Kaitlyn, is now attending graduate school at UCO.
