The UCO Department of English is proud to announce that the Everett Southwest Literary Award has a winner for 2011. The competition called for novel manuscripts and was judged by writer Sandra Cisneros, award-winning author of “The House on Mango Street” and “Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories.” Cisneros chose “Poplar Crescent,” by John Tait, to receive the $5,000 award. About the winning novel, Cisneros says:
“It’s generous, wise, funny, poignant … it had me from the first page. I didn’t have to read it, I wanted to read it, and that’s the definition of a truly good tale. It is forward moving and nuanced, and like every great novel, the writer has gotten out of the way and let the story rush forward like a river in rain. I was swept away.”
