Upcoming Runoff Primary Election Reminders

With voters heading to the polls Tuesday for statewide runoff primary and secondary elections, the Oklahoma State Election Board has provided several tips and reminders for Oklahoma voters to keep in mind before you head to the polls.

Election Day Voting

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day. Lines at the polls are typically longest during lunch hours and after work, and all eligible voters in line before 7 p.m. will be permitted to vote.

Closed Primaries

Oklahoma election have closed primaries. Voters registered with the Democratic or Republican parties will only be able to vote in their party’s primary. Independent voters are eligible to vote in the Democratic primary, should they request a Democratic ballot on election day. Independent and Libertarian voters are eligible to vote in any nonpartisan elections on their ballot.

Verify Your Polling Place

Due to statutory redistricting, some precincts have changed. As a result, some polling places may have also changed. All voters should verify their polling place before heading to the polls. Voters can verify their polling place using the OK Voter Portal or by contacting their County Election Board or the State Election Board. You must be at your assigned polling place to vote.

Be Prepared

Be sure to study the candidates and issues before going to the polls. You can view your sample ballot, find your polling place, and track the status of your absentee ballot using the OK Voter Portal. You can visit the Oklahoma State Election Board website to view the election list.

Proof of Identity

Oklahoma law requires all voters who vote in person to show a valid proof of identity before receiving a ballot.

There are three ways to show proof of identity under the law (only one proof of identity is required):

  1. Show a valid photo ID issued by the federal, state, or tribal government; or
  2. Show the free voter identification card issued to every voter by their County Election Board; or
  3. Sign an affidavit and vote a provisional ballot. (If the information on the affidavit matches official voter registration records, the ballot will be counted after Election Day.

Ballot Status

Many people have concerns regarding the state of their vote once they cast their ballot. Information regarding ballot status can be found on the State Election Board website, along with details regarding Oklahoma’s voting devices and security procedures. In addition, election results will be available on the Oklahoma State Election Board website after the polls close at 7 p.m. on election night.

Beware of Misinformation/Disinformation

Misinformation and disinformation can run rampant during election time. Because of this, voters are asked to be wary of information that seeks to promote theories or false claims of fraud, voter suppression, and/or other problems. If you experience an issue or believe an election crime has been committed, you should notify your precinct officials and contact your County Election Board while the incident is in progress. County Election Board officials will take immediate action to resolve the issue or contact law enforcement. Remember, state and county election officials should always be your trusted source of voting information.

Early Voting for Runoff Primary Begins

The Oklahoma State election board released a statement yesterday reminding voters that early voting for the August 23 Runoff Primary elections in Oklahoma begins tomorrow in all counties. Early voting will be available on Thursday, August 18 and Friday, August 19 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Saturday, August 20 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

As Oklahoma has closed primary election, voters will only be eligible to vote in their party’s primary. The Democratic Party however, has made an exception this year and has opened their primary elections to voters registered as Independents. Sample ballots can be found in the OK Voter Portal here. The list of elections by county can be found here, and a list of early voting locations can be found here, both courtesy of the Oklahoma State Election Board.

Finally, voters who have requested an absentee ballot for the August 23 Runoff Primary are reminded that their ballots must be received by their county election board no later than 7:00 p.m. on election night. These ballots can be returned by the United States Postal Service or private mail carrier, provided documentation is present. “Standard” absentee ballots can be handed directly to the county election board, but must be returned no later than the end of the business day on Monday, August 22. The voter in question must be the person to hand deliver their ballot, and must have valid proof of identity when dropping their ballot off.

If you have any question regarding the upcoming Runoff Primary, or about Oklahoma’s elections in general, please contact your County Election Board or the State Election Board at (405) 522-2391.

Oklahoma State Election Board August 1st Press Release

The Oklahoma State Election Board held a press release last Monday releasing the results of Oklahoma’s first authorized post-election audits. Announced by State Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax, the audits confirmed the accuracy of all June 28th primary elections in the state of Oklahoma.

Thirty-three (33) county election boards across the state conducted audits of randomly selected precincts and races from the June 28th primary. The audits, conducted on July 28th included Election Day ballots, mailed absentee ballots, and in-person absentee ballots. The public was invited to attend all audits.

State Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax stated that these post election audits “add an additional layer of transparency and security to Oklahoma elections.” Ziriax went on to say that Oklahoma “has one of the most accurate and secure voting systems in the world,” citing the post election audits as evidence of this.

Oklahoma State Election Board July 13th Press Release

The Oklahoma State Election Board held a press release yesterday confirming the outcome of recount elections held for the Oklahoma County District Attorney, District 7 Republican Primary, McIntosh County Commissioner, District 3 Democratic Primary, and Nowata County Assessor Republican Primary.

Recounts in McIntosh county and Nowata county matched the initial election results exactly, and recounts in Oklahoma county confirmed prior election results with only six changes made out of nearly 58,000 ballots turned in. The changes made were for Robert W. Gray (+2), Gayland Gieger (+2), and Kevin Calvey (+2).

Secretary of the State Election Board Paul Ziriax spoke on the recounts, calling them the “latest proof that Oklahoma’s eScan voting devices accurately tabulate ballots.” Ziriax hopes that the recounts will help to increase trust in Oklahoma’s elections in the face of the misinformation claims that election officials have been hearing since 2020.

For the full press release, visit the Oklahoma State Election Board’s website here. Results for the June 28th primary can also be found on the Election Board website.
